So back in March, before the world went to crappo, I took a trip to North Carolina! I feel like as long as this shoot is at the same(ish) time every year, I’ll be there! The How We Gather shootout is one of my favorite events to attend. The people I’ve met through the last few times I’ve attended and stayed in touch with, just wow. This year they went with a bold and beautiful vibe, with some amazing surprises along the way. Everything about the event was phenomenal, but the photos I was able to take. This doesn’t just happen guys. We really put a lot of work into our images. We learn, take courses, go to events, mess up, hate our work, love our work, cry, get back up, try again. It’s an endless circle and we are ever changing and learning. There is always something I can change or make better. New trends to look out for or learn new technique.
I could easily just tell you to enjoy looking at these images, but what good would that do? Instead I want to share a little bit of my heart with you. These images are so special to me because of what they represent, who I was when I took them, who I am now, and what I’ve taken from the event. The sense of family and community that I gain by even just chatting with these people can easily bring tears to my eyes. They really get it. We shared a family style meal together. Laughed over finding out I live in the same area that someone else is from. Drinking too much wine and getting too much sun. Allowing myself to be a creative, not just a photographer. We danced and sang, laughed and clapped. It was perfect. That’s what I want to share with you all. See that when you look at these photos, look beyond the pretty colors and people. See the emotion and memories.
